The
mission of TNCHPS is to identify, protect, and enhance African
American contributions to Tennessee history, culture, and
architecture through historic preservation, cultural conservation,
and public education.
TNCHPS
seeks to increase the number of African Americans involved
in historic preservation, provide technical assistance for
community and neighborhood improvement initiatives, and
increase awareness of African American historic sites across
cities and counties. TNCHPS has a speaker’s bureau
and will host conferences and symposia to educate civic
leaders and future generations. In Memphis and across the
State of Tennessee, African-Americans have a rich historic
legacy. Some of it is waiting to be discovered. All of it
is important for our children and grandchildren to learn
about and from which to obtain inspiration.
TNCHPS
is currently involved in the following projects: working
with the Tennessee Department of Tourism to develop an African
American Cultural heritage Guidebook, documenting the existence
of Rosenwald Schools in Memphis and Shelby County, documenting
the Social History of individuals of Memphis and Shelby
County African Americans, hosting in January 2008 ‘Eyes
on the Prize...Where Do We Go From Here’, and in February
2008 co-hosting ‘A Voice with a Song’ African
American History Concert in Union City, TN.
The
previous events were hosting the 2006 African American Preservation
Alliance Conference, hosting Diva Gala in 2005 and hosting
‘A Lady with a Song’ in 2006.
